Public Lecture on James Joyce, Nov 12th 2016
As part of the course in lifelong education currently being held by Tsurumi University, I was very proud to give to a lecture on my favourite writer, Irish man of genius, James Joyce. I was invited to do so by fellow English Department teacher Motoko Sugano. I am profoundly in her debt as Prof Sugano was present throughout the two-hour lecture, in the 'Daigaku Kaikan', translating each passage I spoke, from English to Japanese. It was a wonderful experience, as the students, numbering about twenty, listened with great interest and asked many questions at the end of the talk. I was also able to introduce students to Ireland, my home country, not simply by talking about Joyce's literature, but also by showing a number of images, and by letting them listen to a variety of Irish music. It was a great experience and I have the students and Prof Sugano to thank for allowing me to talk so much. That's an Irish trait!
