I teach English communication, literature (UK / Irish) and academic skills. In communication classes, I try to encourage students to speak as much as possible by making the lesson as interesting and fun as possible. We often practice language used for real-life situations, so we also need to act as well as speak. A good balance between all four language skills is important: reading, speaking, writing and listening. I hope to have elements in all classes, but with emphasis on spoken communication.
Regarding other classes, literature and post-grad studies, I am passionate about literature and academic studies, too. I believe literature to be a very exciting area of study, and believe in encouraging a very interactive, two-way manner of learning. In the literature class, we look at a number of short stories and poems specially chosen in order to illustrate a range of essential elements. I want students to see the stories and poems as something which has relevance for them. For academic skills classes, I draw upon my own experience of publishing papers and giving presentations at conferences etc..
■ こんな研究をしています
I have published on a number of different topics (including football and pirates!), but basically have three main areas of interest: Medieval English Literature, James Joyce, and Irish poetry.

I also wrote a paper on Seamus Heaney (read at IASIL Japan conference 2010, published 2011, Tsurumi Kiyo). A bit controversial that one ! Cause of major stress !!!
Currently working on about 5,000 different writing projects….. (ha, ha, ha, but a lot….). Actually, when I wrote that it was kind of accurate, but now, I am doing my best to relax. I do have a paper on Joyce's Camber Music which I am working on, but I rather hope to play a lot of blues etc on my guitar(s) rather than give myself stress.
■ 主な学内活動
I am a member of the Ipakkusanzen Committee and I join this very interesting activity every year. This year was maybe my sixth or seventh time. Can you do ‘zazen’??? Well, if I can do it…..
■ URL
IF you wish to hear my guitar playing, well now you can. Just input my name and name of university (in English or Japanese) into YouTube. Or... keyword 'machrijam' for most of my YouTube efforts.
■ その他
In my free time I do a number of things, play with my two boys (football/chess/jigsaw/football/bey-blade/magnetic-darts/indoor-beachball/hiking/ football/running-about -like-eejits, and football), enjoy movies (very much! everything from Jimmy Cagney to ‘Blade Runner’, or a bit of Ken Loach) and fine wining and dining with my wife, hiking, going for runs, listening to weird seventies jazz-rock (very into John McLaughlin) and playing jazz-rock-folk-blues-no category (!) guitar stuff. I’m also into Star Trek (the real Star Trek, made in the sixties!), so Live Long and Prosper! Also, can’t resist a bit of Monty Python or Fawlty Towers. Poetry is also a passion (to write as well as read). I also have a great interest in Spanish and have even done a bit of translating recently: a short story by Ecuadorian writer Javier Vasconez. Actually, I love a great deal of Latin-American literature and I recommend ‘Rayuela’ or ‘Cronopios y Famas’ by Julio Cortazar. I also recommend that, one day, you visit my home country, Ireland, and discover how beautiful it is. Especially Donegal, where there are no trains and very few buses, but a lot of great wee pubs. Ah, sure the Guinness is great! Another place to recommend is where I live: Isehara! Go there to enjoy Oyama, famous for tofu (best restaurant is called Wachuso ? 和仲荘 「わちゅうそう」 ? near the bus terminal. Have some ‘tofu gratin’, ‘goma dofu’ and delicious ‘yomogi soba’ ! I often run up to Oyama and have completed the Oyama Marathon three times. Very tiring, but what a view!
